The Beatles - Maxwell’s Silver Hammer

Abbey Road Album

Joan was quizzical, studied pataphysical
Science in the home
Late nights all alone with a test-tube ohh oh oh oh
Maxwell Edison majoring in medicinem
Calls her on the phone
Can I take you out to the pictures, Joan?
But as she’s getting ready to go
A knock comes on the door

Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again
Teacher gets annoyed
Wishing to avoid an unpleasant scene
She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away
So he waits behind
Writing 50 times “I must not be so” oh oh oh
But when she turns her back on the boy
He creeps up from behind

Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Do do do do do
Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

P.C. Thirty-One said “We caught a dirty one”
Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures ohh oh oh oh
Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery
Say he must go free (Maxwell must go free)
The judge does not agree and he tells them so oh oh oh
But as the words are leaving his lips
A noise comes from behind

Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Do do do do do
Bang, Bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead
Wow wow wow oh!
Do do do do do

Silver hammer Max

  4. Lol, I have a sick …
Lol, I have a sick sense of humor. Always had a liking for dark and disturbing things…

But I’m not totally and completely into those sort of things. It’s just a side interest.

  5. Also, HOW did they …
Also, HOW did they get away with this song?! D:

  6. I can only wonder …

  8. Reminds me of …
Reminds me of Stephen King’s story, “The Man Who Loved Flowers”. The guy kills women with a hammer for absolutely no reason.

  9. Paul McCartney …
    Paul McCartney wrote this song……..

    Favorite song by the beatles.

  11. I heard somewhere …
I heard somewhere that the point of this song was that someone bet John Lennon he couldn’t write an uptempo song about a serial killer.

Yeah, but I have to admit, I have a soft spot for death threats too. ;D

    Hehehe yeah right …
Hehehe yeah right after I wrote that I looked it up…I like stories about serial killers better…they just seem to make better stories, dontcha think?

  17. Nope, I was doing …
Nope, I was doing the same. “Run For Your Life” is on Rubber Soul, and you should really listen to it as it’s a fantastic album, but the main message behind “Run For Your Life” is: You leave me and you die!”

More like a death threat than about story about a serial killer.

    Hehehehe…is it …
Hehehehe…is it bad that I was still bouncing along happily to that even though I’d already read the lyrics? Ehh…Oh well. I haven’t heard ‘Run For Your Life’ yet, but I think I just might if it’s like this song…O.o

  19. And with the melody …
And with the melody and all, the song sounds like a fun, catchy song. I remember the first time hearing this song, I was happily bouncing along to the beat and then the lyrics:

“Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer came down upon her head
Clang, clang, Maxwell’s silver hammer made sure that she was dead”

came up, and I was kind of shocked.

  20. LoL, couldn’t agree …
LoL, couldn’t agree with you more tpfang. It almost sounds like a song for a kids show…and then you take the time to listen to the lyrics, it’s like ummm WTF. I was only 4 when it came out, and I remember loving it. If I had known the real words prob would have given me nightmares like a lot of those fairy tales lol.

  21. OK… I KNOW NOW.

    OK… I KNOW NOW.

At 1st I thought this was their debut single from an upcoming CD. But now I know they broke up in 1970.
I wasnt even born yet, until 1972.
Now I’m starting to like the band that Rolling Stone magazine put together from around that time better.
I’m just now getting into it. I’ll let you know if they’re any good.
Mike Jagger is a better guitarist than Nick Jonas any day…I’ll admit that.

    That is pretty true …
That is pretty true. The only thing i have ever heard from john after the split was Imagine.

  23. pastramiitalianappl2 on July 4th, 2009 at 4:26 am

    Are you F***ING …
    Are you F***ING kidding me!!!
How can a band that is less than 5 years old predate a band that has been around since before 1964?
    Idiot.

  24. Ok… I really …
Ok… I really dunno which song is more violent.

“Run For Your Life” written by John on Rubber Soul

Or “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” which is obviously by Paul…

I mean, they are both so violent according to the lyrics and all, but they sound so happy and bouncy, and I seriously feel like dancing to “Run For Your Life”.

*sigh* Only Lennon and McCartney could pull off songs like this. Bless them. :D
