Why do all male figure skaters wear those gold chains and pendants?

Posted on February 25th, 2010 by admin

I don’t always see crosses on them. I’ve seen the Chinese with luck charms on theirs. What’s Evgeni or Johnny Weir wearing then?

They were actually talking about that during the pairs the other night… there was a comment about one of the Chinese men wearing his gold chain during skating, and it’s because in Chinese culture gold is considered lucky/to bring good fortune, and the Chinese have long been superstitious. Therefore they wear the chains… My guess is either other cultures have similar beliefs, or they take a page from the Chinese book and wear them because, hey, what can it hurt?

There’s this secret society of figure skaters, and when you get to the highest ranks you receive the medal of ice, if they remove it they will be murdered.

Darn, my original answer didn’t save.

Why do some women jewelry and some don’t? Why do athletes refuse to shave during some streak, or insist on wearing the same socks all season long for game days. Its usually superstition that plays a role. Athletes are very finicky and usually try to keep everything in a routine. If it works, they keep it up.

Usually, folks will wear items to accessorize or as a ritual as mentioned above. As for jonny, i’ve seen him with and without jewelry in various events depending on the mood and the performance. I don’ t think he has a certain one he uses under his outfits.

Looking around some more, I see this interview on his website where he was asked the same question from 2007 and the answer is below:

A: I actually have a new collection for this season. Some of the charms are old though. I have two stars of David, an imperial rouble, two hands of god, a cheburashka, an orthodox ring that Elene Gedevanishvilli gave me with a protection prayer on it, and a horse head. They all have different meanings, but in general they protect me with the positive energy they have. All of them are gifts, so I know they were given with love.

Not all of them wear them. Most are good luck charms given to them by parents, grandparents, coaches etc.
