Why do most of the professional runners such as the ones at the world champs wear necklaces?

They look like they would be really annoying for the runners because they are jumping around on their necks. Also why are they all pretty much identical gold fine chain necklaces?

Some wear ear rings, and other jewelry. They are mostly young, so it is a fashion statement, there is no real reason to wear any kind of jewelry.

Apparantly the necklaces don’t actually slow them down with wind resistance. I think perhaps the runners are used to having them around their necks.
