    He doesn’t mean …
He doesn’t mean getting more from “having” less like the Third World, but from “doing” less.

  5. Pleasure comes from …
Pleasure comes from pretty towns and cathedrals, nice people and good manners ie the british!

    Unfortunately I …
Unfortunately I think he bases his view on when he lived here from the late seventies to mid nineties, and things have changed…

    erm yes,, no-one …
erm yes,, no-one gets more from less? Have you been to India? South-east Asia?
Modern brits get no satisfaction from a huge range of available commodities. Bryson wears rose-tinted specs here. I don’t think Bryson has travelled as much as we thought.

  8. one of the many …
one of the many reasons i’ve always related to the british.

  9. When I came back to …
When I came back to the States from a year in England, I found that I had spent the year trying so hard to soften my American accent–harsh R’s, loud voice etc.–that when I came home I had kind of a mish-mash not dissiilar to Bryson’s. I notice when he’s speaking in Britain he has the full-on U.K. voice but Stateside he’s kind of in the middle.

  10. I agree. For some …
I agree. For some reason he’s speaking so softly and cautiously it sounds like he’s recording his vocal track in an office where he’s trying not to be heard by someone in the next cubicle.

  11. Well it’s true …
Well it’s true about the tea! Not a day goes by that I am not offered a cup of tea. We exist on the stuff. It’s a social gathering. Not sure about the “entertainment” though…

    this is slightly …
this is slightly patronizing, if u go to a rural welsh coast + look at a bunch of old people this is wot u’d get, but just like anywhere there r buisnisess, parties, clubs and larger than life people

  17. bill bryson writes …
bill bryson writes so well but his voice is so monotone it drains all humour out of his wonderful words,

  18. Although I was …
Although I was raised Australian, my elderly parents are British. I never understood my parents very strange ways until I saw this piece by Bill Bryson. I grew up thinking tea had some magical quality that could just about cure any ailment, from fatigue to a broken heart. Im sure anyone with elderly British parents would get a huge kick from this clip.

  19. Those people are …
Those people are speaking Welsh lol.

  20. Hahaha, I have …
Hahaha, I have lived in Britain all my life and this video doesn’t portray the realities of British life - it simply tries to romanticise the fading aspects of British culture, which really only prevail amongst the older generations.

  21. I’ve been reading …
I’ve been reading all of Bryson’s books recently. Even though he can be hilarious and bitingly sarcastic, when he encounters someplace or someone he likes, he straightforwardly expresses his admiration. That puts him a cut above writers who feel they have to put out a constant stream of sarcasm.

  22. This was filmed in …
    This was filmed in 1998.

    A liked the video …
A liked the video alot, but come on, when was it filmed?
I’ve never in my life seen a hotel in the UK advertise hot and cold water - that’s a bit misleading

    What ‘Outonbailnow’ …
What ‘Outonbailnow’ says is definatly true. But if you remember, in ‘notes from a small island’ he says a lot of the things he loves about the country, we dont even notice because were British. (I know your irish but mannerisms are similar).

  25. Bryson’s trying to …
    Bryson’s trying to frenchify Britain!
