I have a necklace made of thin rubber cord with tiny silver beads every 1/2". Over the years it has become stiff and holds it’s own nutty shape now so can’t be worn. Any ideas for softening it?
I don’t know exactly which "rubber cord" you have, but many of them will eventually lose their elasticity and softness and especially if they’re subjected to too much UV light (sunlight, fluorescent) or heat.
At that point I’m not sure anything can be done but guess you could try rubbing Vaseline into it or some kind of oil and see if it would be absorbed over a day or two and make any difference.
Some kinds of rubbery cording are less susceptible to UV rays (like Viton, for example, and possibly buna-V), so you could re-string the beads onto those, or just re-string onto more buna-N cord like you probably already have and store it out of light and heat–should last quite a while that way. I’ve heard that even buna-N, the most common kind, comes in various qualities but don’t know that for sure.
Or you could re-string on some other kind of cording instead.
You can read more about the types of rubbery cording, where to get them, what their characteristics are, etc., on this page of my site if you’re interested:
