What is a good way to store my jewellery?

Posted on November 13th, 2009 by admin

I’m clearing my room, and I have lots of bracelets and necklaces that keep getting tangled. I have one jewellery ‘tree’ but it is not big enough for all off them, and jewellery boxes don’t really seperate them and keep them organised. Any ideas?

If you don’t have jewelry boxes.. here’s a good idea.

Buy some envelopes, you can make them any color you want. And you can accessorize them however you want to. With stickers, glitter, anything! Make sure you leave room on the front. Write down on the front of the envelope what the necklace/bracelet is!!

Put it in a drawer, and you’re ready to rockk & rolll. (;

Where can I buy a quality basic tool kit to start making silver jewellery at home?

I´d like to start making silver jewellery at home. I understand I will need a selection of pliers, a soldering torch, saw etc. but where can I buy a good quality, but reasonably priced, kit (maybe online)? I live in Barcelona… Thanks!
I´d like to start making silver jewellery at home. I understand I will need a selection of pliers, a soldering torch, saw etc. but where can I buy a good quality, but reasonably priced, kit (maybe online)? I live in Barcelona… Thanks!
p.s. I only speak beginners Spanish so a jewellery course here would be impossibe. I also have an educational background in art & craft up to degree level so feel confident I can master jewellrey design at home without the aid of a course… hopefully…

Do you already have a background in jewellery making? If not then I would recommend doing a basic course first so you can get a taste of different techniques and the tools which you need for it. That’s what I did.

Standard tools like basic pliers, calipers, jeweller’s saw, plastic hamers, rulers, sandpaper, files, polishing tools, cuters, etc. can all be bought through standard hardware stores.

Specialised tools like ring gauges, silver solder (note, this is not the silver solder sold in hardware stores), heat resistant pliers, casting pans, mould sand, shaped wire bending pliers can be bought through stores which cater to jewellery makers. If you join a course you should be able to arrange such orders through your teacher. He’ll also be able to give advise. You will also need to get you silver there. Another source of silver is you local silversmith. That is, if he’s willing to part with it.

I just saw that there will be a jewellery fair in Barcelona at the end of the year. You could go there and talk to silversmiths and ask them for local tool and material sources:
http://www.biztradeshows.com/trade-events/barcelona-jewellery-fair.html

Edit: to react to your additions: I’m sure you can find a course in Barcelone itself in Spanish. There will probably be leaflets on the show. With your background you should be able to design jewellery but I think that a basic course will be usefull to learn how to actually use silver and to make contacts. One tip: you can work with Brass to practise the techniques before using silver. Brass is much easier to find.

By the way, what kind of jewellery do you want to make? Your toolset will depend on that.

How much percent of jewellery appraisals should I expext if I sell to a jewellery buyer?

Posted on October 9th, 2009 by admin

I know appraisals are inflated to the maximum for insurance purposes, and that If I sell jewellery, I cannot expect them to pay the full appraisal amount to me.

But how much should I expect? Not from a pawn shop, but from a jewellery/gold/silver buyer.

Half the appraisal? One third?

My experience is about 1/3 to 40% absolute maximum

How can i register a company name for a jewellery selling business?

Posted on October 7th, 2009 by admin

Me and my partner are setting up a jewellery selling business, we are a bit unsure of the things we need to do to get started. We have a name so we need to register the name but we are not sure which website to go to for this so it is legitimate. There seem to be so many. Also do we need to register with companies house? Any advise would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

you need to go to your local small business offices and register your business name and get a business license, if you are doing this from home it should be an easy thing to handle, less than $200 bucks. Good luck!

What do people look for when buying jewellery?

Posted on October 3rd, 2009 by admin

Hello everyone. I’m a young women interested in starting the best Jewellery business EVER. I’m in the research stage and would like to know what people want & Deliver exceptional results. 9K gold, Sterling silver & silver/lead toned chains are the features enriched with Swarovski Crystals, Freshwater peals & exotic beads.

You are on the right track about using quality products in your designs. But you will have to narrow your market down. If you try to cater to what everyone wants then your market is too open and competition stiff.

Everyone has different tastes and you won’t be able to satisfy them all. So try to target the market that YOU would like to design your jewelry for.

As part of your market research you will need to know what is the profile of your typical customer (i.e. age, sex, location, interests, education, etc.)? In investigating your potential customers, you must consider who will wear your jewelry.

In finding the answers to these questions ask yourself: Who do you think would probably buy your jewelry, or who are you making your designs for? For example do you want to reach sophisticated, professionals? Young and funky? Everyday or party wear?

If you are using a lot of Swarovski and pearls what about bridal or prom jewelry?

Once you have identified who your customers are, or to whom your jewelry is appealing, you can then cater to the taste of this typical customer and seek the best ways to reach him or her.

The next questions now are: How do you plan to distribute your jewelry to your customers (i.e. craft shows, wholesale to retail outlets, specialty shops, your studio shop, holiday boutiques, party plan, website, etc.)? How will you inform customers about your jewelry?

Also in your market research you need to know what your competition is doing. You will learn more about what is selling where, to whom, and at what prices by carefully observing the competition. Once you have an idea of what you want to make, surf the net, attend as many shows, go to as many stores, and seek out as many other points of sale as you can for the same style of jewelry as you wish to market. Then ask yourself: Can customers easily get what you make from someone else, perhaps at a lower price than what you would have to charge to make a profit? Is your jewelry unique or is the market already saturated with the style of jewelry you want to make? Like I said earlier competition is stiff so your designs have to be unique!
