How do you calculate the mass of silver chloride in this chemistry problem?

Posted on January 28th, 2010 by admin

Silver chloride, often used in silver plating, contains 75.27% Ag.

Calculate the mass of silver chloride required to plate 165 mg of pure silver?

use molar masses:
0.165 grams Ag @ (143.32 g/mol AgCl) / (107.9 g/mol Ag) =
0.219 g AgCl would be required

or

using a ratio of % ’s
0.165 g Ag @ (100 % AgCl) / (75.27% Ag) =
0.219 g of AgCl would be required

in both ways,
your answer is
219 mg of AgCl

What to do if jeweler swapped my platinum engagement ring band for 14k gold?

Posted on January 23rd, 2010 by admin

I took my platinum ring in to the same place it was bought to have it re-sized. I didn’t look at the inscriptions until I got home, but it now says 14k instead of 95 plat and it feels much lighter. I stupidly didn’t notice while I was at the shop. Other than taking it back and hoping they make it right, anything else I can do? I’m now worried that they also swapped my diamond without me knowing. Completely panicked now.

Ask them. Sue them. That’s heartless.

How is profit made on selling silver tableware to a refinery treated for tax purposes?

Posted on January 23rd, 2010 by admin

Purchased silver flatware and holloware (mostly dented) for the purpose of reselling to a refinery as scrap silver to make a profit.

Most of the pieces were purchased 1-2 years ago; a few within the last year. However, it was refined in one batch with one payout.

Would that profit be treated as ordinary income or capital gain? What are the tax rates?

If capital gain, how would I separate the profit (payout minus basis) into long term and short term gain since it was refined in one big batch with one payout?

How much money are we talking here? Is this a profitable endeavor

Capital gain. the items you purchased more than a year before selllng are long term. and those that you bought less than a year before selling are short term.
you will enter your purchase date and $ paid for it. Then you enter sales date, which will be same for all entries since you sold all at one time. Do you know the weights of each purchase? You would prorate the total price recieved in the sale by the % of weight that each purchase represents.

Can you use 14k gold in a new piercing instead of stainless steel?

Posted on January 21st, 2010 by admin

I’ve gotten piercings before but I think I may be allergic to the stainless steel. I usually always have to wear 14k gold in my ears (I got those pierced when I was very young). I’d like to get my lip pierced again, and was wondering if it’s possible to use 14k gold in the new hole instead of the usual stainless steel. Thank you!

Sure you can get gold in there! The problem is that the piercing parlor has to order the gold ring though which usually takes a bit of time and money. So with that being said if you have the money and the time then go for it! its definitely possible! All I know is that you cant use plastic to begin with, but gold yes. Best of Luck with your decision

Does sterling silver make your fingers go green?

Posted on January 18th, 2010 by admin

I want to buy my dad a sterling silver ring for his birthday from argos. And im just wondering if it will make his finger turn green?

Thanks.

NO sterling silver is just a type of silver that contains less actual silver therefore making it more inexpensive. The only kind of "silver" that will turn your fingers green is the fashion jewelry that is just colored silver and isn’t actually made of any silver. Your fingers turn green when the paint or polish starts to wear off and rubs onto your skin and mixes with the oil in your skin. Sterling silver won’t do that but make sure to polish it with a sterling silver polish cloth to make sure it doesn’t tarnish over time and don’t wear it in the pool or shower excessively otherwise it will tarnish more.

What is the potential worth of 14k diamond ring?

Posted on January 18th, 2010 by admin

beautiful ring w/ many diamonds in star/flower pattern, family heirloom, inside band faintly reveals "14k". I love CZ as much as diamonds, or glass; whatever. The ring is lovely and greatly appreciated. Should I have it appraised, for insurance purposes?

If it’s a family heirloom you might want to have it appraised for replacement value. If the ring is very old I would not think they were CZ’s as CZ’s were first created in the mid 70’s.
What I would suggest to do first is to take it to someone who deals with estate jewelry, and is preferably a GIA graduate gemologist. They can tell you if the gemstones are genuine, and the quality of the gems if real, as well as if the ring would be valuable enough to consider having it appraised and insured.
There are quite a number of jewelers who will provide verbal appraisals for free, but for insurance purposes you will need a written appraisal.
