If it's a family heirloom you might want to have it appraised for replacement value. If the ring is very old I would not think they were CZ's as CZ's were first created in the mid 70's.
What I would suggest to do first is to take it to someone who deals with estate jewelry, and is preferably a GIA graduate gemologist. They can tell you if the gemstones are genuine, and the quality of the gems if real, as well as if the ring would be valuable enough to consider having it appraised and insured.
There are quite a number of jewelers who will provide verbal appraisals for free, but for insurance purposes you will need a written appraisal.
References :
I am a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) graduate with more than 20 years in the jewelry business.

certainly Not. You shouldn't do such things with diamond rings.
References :
http://www.jewelocean.com/

As long as you know that 14k represents the gold band and not the karats of diamonds.

There is no way to put a value without knowing the quality of the Diamonds. If they are low quality with many inclusions (flaws) then the value is lower. They really could be CZ

the ring may be an heirloom and be of high value. You need to let a professional jeweller appraise it for you.

take it to the mall and see if the local Jeweller can give a free opinion
